PetSmart started in 1986 as a pet food warehouse store by Jim Doherty. It opened it's first store in Phoenix and now has over 900 stores in the united states and Canada following rapid expansion through mergers and acquisitions.

Recently, they started adoption centers in the stores where local pet rescue groups can place rescued animals so that they can find an owner. They have currently helped more than 3 million abandoned animals find loving families and better homes.

Along with adoption centers, PetSmart also holds charity events where the proceeds and donations are given to more than 3000 animal adoption groups to help them rescue animals and keep them in safe enviroments. The PetSmart Charity was recently awarded four out of four stars by Charity Navigator, an independant charity evaluation website.

At the momment they are the leading pet supplies store and a direct competitor to PETCO. Apart from having physical stores, they also have an online store where pet supplies can be delivered straight to your door. The only store features over 10,000 products including pet food, bedding and grooming items.
